Kavya Madhavan - A Wonderful Actress from Kerala.

Merci.

Naalu Pennungal - Four Women

NAALU PENNUNGAL - FOUR WOMEN Malayalam Movie

I want to talk about Naalu Pennungal - Four Women, directed by one of the greatest movie directors of our time, Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The movie is split into four parts, based on four short stories written by Jnanpith winner, late Thakazhi Sivasankarapillai. And it's a must see. The surprising thing was that for the first time I saw a packed cinema hall for an Adoor movie. I think it is the huge star cast (consisting mainly of some popular female actors) that draws the crowd to this movie.

The first part of the film is titled ‘Oru Niyamalankhanathinte Kadha’ which means ‘Story of breach of Law’. The woman in this part is Kunjipeenu (Padmapriya) who plays the role of a sex worker who later chooses to live by working as a road worker. It portrays how the society treats such women even when they decide to live their lives in a decent manner. This is of about 20 minutes duration.

The second part of the film is titled ‘Kanyaka’ (Virgin / unmarried) which focuses on the life of Kumari (Geethu Mohandas), married to Narayanan (Nandu) who fails to look after her. She is a peasant and earns money for her family. Her dialogues are less, yet her character is strong enough to compensate with the dialogues.

The third part of the film named ‘Chinnu Amma’ is about the life of Chinnu (Manju Pillai) who does not have children in her life. She is a naïve lady yet strong enough to protect herself against a sin that should not be committed. Mukesh also does his part of the film well.

The final part of the film is named ‘Nithya Kanyaka’ (never married / spinster). Here, the story revolves around the life of three women. The title role is played by Nandita Das as Kamakshi. She is the eldest among the four children of the family. Kavya Madhavan who plays Subhadra is the younger sister of Kamakshi. Remya Nambeeshan also plays sister’s role. This part tells how a lady can live alone without support from anyone in the society. It portrays a woman who was once dependant earlier, but became strong and independent towards the end.

Adoor's craftsmanship can be seen as he sets every single frame and characters to reflect the time that the story is originally set. So it feels quite alrght to hear the dialogue deliveries, acting, which otherwise would have seemed odd. Each and every single actor has done their parts well. M J Radhakrishnan's camera and Issac Thomas' music are other highlights. The four leading characters have given life to the characters they have portrayed. Of all the four stories, I liked the first and last one the most. Among the actors, you would notice the performances by KPAC Lalitha, M R Gopakumar the most. They seem so natural in acting. Manju Pillai's performance is to be noted as she never a big name in the mainstream or parallel cinema, but such a fine actor she is. Padmapriya, Geethu Mohandas and Nandita Das have done very well, while I understand Kavya Madhavan taking up such a short but important role.
This movie is an easy-watch (compared to the old Adoor movies that requires the audience to have a complete social and political awareness of the time that the movie is set in to enjoy the film), but you will take some of the characters and story plots with you even after you leave the theatre.
